Why This Trade Would Benefit The Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks originally brought Porzingis to town to team with Doncic. After one postseason appearance in the bubble, the Mavericks were expected to become a staple but have not played like a postseason team this year. If patience are running low in the front office, they could look to shake things up.
Luka Doncic is the real deal — we know that. He is averaging 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 9.2 assists per game and looking like an MVP candidate. At 21-years old, Doncic is already one of the top players in the game. He will have to get paid at some point and right now, the Mavericks have a ton of money wrapped up in Porzingis.
He signed a five-year, $158.3 million deal once he was traded. DeRozan is in the final year of his contract, paying him $27.7 million this season. Dallas would have the freedom to make a decision on DeRozan once the season is complete. If they re-sign him, it would be for an extremely lower price tag.

This is a move that would clear some room for the Mavericks while adding an all-star caliber guard. If Dallas can get DeRozan on a bargain in his next deal, this trade seems like a no-brainer for Dallas.
