Trade Scenario No. 3 — Dallas Mavericks

Sacramento Kings Receive: C James Johnson, G Trey Burke, F Dorian Finney-Smith, DAL 2021 2nd Round Pick, DAL 2022 1st Round Pick, DAL 2026 1st Round Pick

Dallas Mavericks Receive: G Buddy Hield, F Glenn Robinson III, SAC 2023 2nd Round Pick

While the Sacramento Kings have not had a winning season since the 2005-06 NBA season, they have been getting better over the last two years and have been just a couple of games back from the playoff hunt. While they are currently 12-15, the Kings have a chance to make the playoffs for the first time since 2006, but they will need to improve their overall roster.

Trading Buddy Hield to the Mavericks definitely gives them the talent they need and they get a lot of draft compensation as well. James Johnson is a veteran frontcourt player who is an aggressive rebounder, Trey Burke is a proven scoring guard and Dorian Finney-Smith is an impact defender on the wing who can knock-down three-point shots.

All three players from the Mavericks fill different positional needs for the Kings and give them a lot of overall depth, something they currently do not have. Sacramento has some solid frontcourt players in Richaun Holmes, Hassan Whiteside and Marvin Bagely III, as well as some great backcourt players in De’Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton, but they have struggled to find production on the wing.

Harrison Barnes has been very streaky this year and they do not really have any key perimeter contributors outside of Hield. Not only can Trey Burke provide the Kings with perimeter shooting, but Dorian Finney-Smith can give them a reliable second-unit forward to play alongside Harrison Barnes on the wing, as he’s shown to do with the Mavericks.

Not to mention, the Kings would be receiving a second-round pick this year and two future first-round picks that they could utilize to continue drafting high-level, young talents. Out of any trade involving Buddy Hield, this trade scenario with the Mavericks is probably one of the more balanced ones they will find in terms of future talent and role players to help them win now.
