Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers are definitely a title favorite this season because of the dominance of big man Joel Embiid, but with Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris also being high-impact players, the Sixers have numerous weapons to be able to compete against the best of the best. Shake Milton has been a terrific bench player for them, but trading him and a guy like Terrance Ferguson, who does not play much, for an established veteran talent like Lou Williams makes a lot of sense.

Williams knows what it takes to win and has been a part of numerous championship caliber teams over the years. He has achieved a lot in his career, but the one thing he has yet to do is win a championship and a ring. With this accomplishment, he could very much be in the discussion to make the Hall-of-Fame and his chances in doing so are better with the Sixers than with the Clippers.

Outside of Ben Simmons, the 76ers do not have much production from their backcourt, especially since Seth Curry is not much of a ball-handler and Danny Green is a catch-and-shoot wing. Adding another reliable point guard to come off-the-bench will take a lot of pressure off of Ben Simmons and could help him be an even better two-way player than he already is.

Not to mention, Lou Williams can be that fourth reliable scorer this team needs to win a championship. Their three core players and Josl Embiid, Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris create one of the best trios in the entire NBA, but adding that fourth reliable scoring option could really go a long way in separating the Sixers from other high-level teams in this league.

The only way to win championships now is sacrificing future assets, which is what the 76ers would be doing in this trade. Their championship window is small as it is with the “Big 3” in Brooklyn and Giannis’ dominance with the Bucks, which is why the 76ers should be willing to leverage almost any of their assets to acquire a veteran bench talent like Lou Williams.
