Why This Trade Would Benefit The San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs are a team that is going in a different direction. They missed the postseason for the first time in 22 years a season ago and this set them in a bit of a retooling of the roster. With his age and current contract, DeMar DeRozan is not a piece for the future and San Antonio knows this.
DeRozan is a win-now player and this is why both sides would benefit from a trade. The Spurs are two games above .500 so far this season and he has been a reason why, but that does not mean that he is safe. The Spurs are not a championship team this season.
Players like Dejounte Murray and Keldon Johnson are the future and it is important to put some pieces for the future around them. This is where players like Marcus Smart and Robert Williams III come into play. Both players have played valuable minutes for a Celtics’ team that has made deep postseason runs.
They would be great replacements for members of the Spurs, especially if LaMarcus Aldridge is ultimately dealt as well. Gregg Popovich will have his team back to contending soon enough but it will be with a different cast of characters.
When all things are considered, DeMar DeRozan has to be dealt at some point prior to the NBA trade deadline. It makes the most sense for both sides and a contender like the Boston Celtics make plenty of sense as a potential suitor given their $28.5M trade exception.
