Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Toronto Raptors
While this may not seem like the right move for the Raptors, getting rid of Kyle Lowry and O.G. Anunoby could have some benefits. Ultimately, Toronto would probably hold off on trading either Lowry or Anunoby unless they were getting some young, high-level talent in return.
In this trade though, getting Griffin could definitely have a positive impact on their organization and so could the two first-round draft picks they would be receiving. Starting with Griffin, he is now 31-years old and is not the player he once was, but is still an impactful, experienced player who could be a great addition in the frontcourt with Pascal Siakam and Chris Boucher.
Griffin has always been known to be an aggressive big man who can score all-around the court on the offensive end, but this season he has struggled to score. He is in need of a change of scenery and joining an athletic Toronto Raptors team could be the right fit for him.
As for the draft picks the Raptors would be receiving, they would go a long way in not just acquiring more young, high-level talent for this organization, but give them the option to potentially make another big move. Seeing that the Raptors have plenty of draft picks over the years, they could use these two first-round picks to either gain another 2021 first-round pick, or even trade for some established role players near the trade deadline.
In doing so, the Raptors could make another push to be one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference and hopefully contend for a Conference Championship. In the end, trading away Lowry and Anunoby definitely has its flaws, but there are some benefits that come with this trade.
