Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Detroit Pistons
This is definitely one of the better trade packages the Pistons could come across for Blake Griffin and realistically, may not even be an option. This would be asking a lot of the Toronto Raptors to make this trade, but if the Pistons could pull it off, they would be looking way ahead of schedule in their rebuilding process.
Building a young core of the future and setting themselves up for future success has been a goal of the Pistons throughout the offseason heading into this season, which is why acquiring Kyle Lowry may not make sense. A big reason why this trade makes sense for them though is that Kyle Lowry could be an excellent mentor for rookie guard Killian Hayes and Lowry is in the final year of his contract.
If the Pistons opt to not re-sign him after the year, they would have $30M to go out in free agency and bring in another high-level talent like they did with Jerami Grant this offseason, which turned out to be a fantastic move.
The 26-year old forward is definitely in the running for the Most Improved Player Award this season and is having an All-Star type of year so far. Through 13 games, Grant is averaging 24.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and shooting 46.7% from the floor, 38.9% from three-point range. Bringing in an All-Star player like Lowry to pair with Grant could set the Pistons up for a lot of success now and in the future, especially given the young talent they also have on the roster.
With a young core in the works, having three reliable players in Lowry, Grant and Anunoby could be huge for the Pistons moving forward. Getting rid of Blake Griffin’s massive contract now definitely helps them, but losing two valuable first-round picks could end up hurting them in the long-run.
However, this trade definitely sets them up for the most success now and gives them options on how to build this team moving forward. Not to mention, this trade also reunites Kyle Lowry with his old head coach in Toronto, Dwane Casey.
