Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Detroit Pistons

Derrick Rose put together a solid season for Detroit last year and played in 50 games for them, but after drafting Killian Hayes 7th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft to be the point guard of the future, the Detroit Pistons may be very willing to trade Rose and get something for him since he is not in their long-term plans moving forward.

This season, with the team looking to get Hayes as much experience at point guard as possible, Rose does not have that big of a role. The Pistons could really utilize a player like Buddy Hield at the shooting guard position and given that they are one of the worst offensive teams in the league, he could step into a bigger role in his career.

This past offseason, Detroit added Jerami Grant to the roster, signing him to a three-year, $60M deal, and he has looked like an NBA All-Star early on in the season. Through 10 games, Grant is averaging 25.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and is shooting 46.5% from the floor, 37.5% from three-point range.

With him being their only legit threat on the offensive end of the court, it would make perfect sense for the Pistons to want to acquire a shooter like Buddy Hield on the wing. Detroit currently ranks 21st in the league in points per game and 28th in the league in three-point shooting percentage; two areas Buddy Hield could drastically change this franchise for the better.

Derrick Rose is on an expiring contract and with the Pistons not having him in their long-term plans, it would be extremely beneficial for them to get a player like Hield for him. Delon Wright is nothing more than a role player for Detroit and after drafting both Isaiah Stewart and Saddiq Bey, Sekou Doumbouya’s role with this organization could also begin to decrease.

In the end, trading away these three guys makes perfect sense for the Detroit Pistons, especially since they are in no shape to contend for a playoff spot this season. Moving forward though, with a young core to work with and three established guys in Jerami Grant, Blake Griffin and Buddy Hield, the Pistons could eventually turn themselves into a very good team in the Eastern Conference.
