Toronto Raptors Receive: F Aaron Gordon, G/F Evan Fournier, ORL 2021 1st Round Pick
Orlando Magic Receive: G Kyle Lowry, G Terence Davis
The Orlando Magic are in a weird place as a franchise because they have some talented young players to work with moving forward, but they have some older players on big contracts, leaving this organization with virtually no money to go out and bring in other talented players in NBA free agency.
This offseason, Orlando let D.J. Augustin sign with the Bucks after being with the Magic for four seasons and they drafted Cole Anthony 15th overall to be their point guard of the future. They also still have Markelle Fultz, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, on their roster. With plenty of trade assets and the need for a leader, the Magic are very much in play for a potential trade with Toronto.
Aaron Gordon’s name has long been brought up in trade talks, especially this offseason. Packaging him with Evan Fournier, who is on an expiring contract, frees up a lot of cap space for Orlando Magic, something they will need after signing Markelle Fultz to a contract extension this past NBA offseason and since they will likely sign Lowry to a long-term extension after acquiring him.
With Lowry leading this team, the Magic could absolutely be a team to watch closely in the Eastern Conference as Lowry, Vucevic, Ross and Fultz definitely make for an interesting team. As for the Raptors, getting two key role players in Gordon and Fournier could be instrumental to their success.
Not only would they be one of the more athletic teams in the league, but they would have the freedom to potentially go out in free agency next season and bring in another All-Star level talent if they opt not to sign Fournier to a long-term deal.
As it pertains to winning now, getting Aaron Gordon and Evan Fournier definitely contributes to more wins for the Raptors than keeping Kyle Lowry because it gives them more options to deal with on the offensive end of the court. VanVleet and Siakam are the leaders of this team moving forward in the event that they trade Lowry, making Gordon and Fournier two excellent complimentary players in Toronto’s system.
