Washington Wizards Receive: C Andre Drummond

Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: F Davis Bertans, C Thomas Bryant & WAS 2022 1st Round Pick (Lottery-Protected)

Landing Andre Drummond would be a dream come true for the Washington Wizards front office, but there are some major roadblocks they would have to get over with Davis Bertans’ contract situation. Since they recently signed Bertans to a five-year, $80M contract-extension this offseason, he is ineligible to be traded until February 20, 2021 at the earliest.

That means this trade could likely not take place until around the trade deadline in March 2021. Given the Wizards’ lack of frontcourt play though, they most likely would be willing to do this trade once they are eligible to do so.

In his 8-years in the NBA, Andre Drummond has constantly produced some impressive numbers, but never gets the credit he deserves. He is a 2x All-Star, led the league in rebounding four different seasons, and has averaged a double-double in points and rebounds in every season since his rookie season in 2012-13.

Last season, Drummond was traded at the trade deadline to the Cleveland Cavaliers from the Pistons and while he only played in 8 games with the Cavs, he was very productive, averaging 17.5 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and shooting 55.2% from the floor.

Last year was Bertans’ first season with the Wizards and he had a career year. He solidified himself as one of the best three-point shooters in the entire league and shot 42.4% from three-point range last season on 472 total three-point attempts.

Standing 6’10”, it is almost impossible to contest Bertans shot on the perimeter and his pure shooting form is something that could be very valuable for the Cavaliers who are looking to bring in as much young talent as possible. Cleveland’s frontcourt has lacked talent over the years and with questions about Kevin Love’s future with the organization, it would make sense for them to want to bring in two young frontcourt players to move forward with.

With all of that being said, let’s take a closer look at this trade and why this trade would make sense for both the Wizards and Cavaliers.
