Why the Deal Benefits the San Antonio Spurs
In this trade, it is basically DeMar DeRozan for Andrew Wiggins. The San Antonio Spurs would add some NBA Draft capital in the form of second rounders, but Wiggins coming to the Spurs would be the biggest part for them.
On paper, it might not seem like a deal that would completely shake up the franchise, but that is not true. If a player is unhappy with the current situation, a team should send them away for a return. If the return is a player like Wiggins in the backcourt, that is just a bonus.
Wiggins is a player who has lived off potential but has yet to take that next step. There are a few coaches better than Gregg Popovich at developing players. This seems like a match for both sides.
If San Antonio wants to get back to the postseason, they need players that want to be there. If this is not DeRozan, they should look for the trade that gives them the most back. There will certainly be some teams interested in the veteran.
