Can The Hawks Lead The NBA In Three-Point Scoring?
Looking back on 2019-20 season stats, the Hawks have 10 players on their roster this upcoming season who all shot over 33% from three-point range last season. Some of their key offseason additions will bolster their perimeter shooting by a lot this season, but the development of other guys like Cam Reddish, De’Andre Hunter and Kevin Huerter could also cause the Hawks three-point shooting to skyrocket.
Starting with Cam Reddish; he shot 33.2% from three-point range last year and saw a fair amount of time on the court during his rookie season. He still ended up averaging double-figures for the season, but the Atlanta Hawks will really look to utilize Cam Reddish as a “3-and-D” type player off-the-bench this season, as they have been working on his jumper and defensive abilities a lot this offseason.
As mentioned earlier, De’Andre Hunter is already a solidified defensive player, but his high three-point shooting percentage last season may have come as a surprise to some who followed him when he was at Virginia. He could knock down perimeter shots here and there, but was never known as a high-volume three-point specialist. If he can continue to shoot around 36% or better from deep, it would make this Hawks offense even more lethal than it is trending towards being.
Kevin Huerter can be best described as a sharpshooter. Trailing only Trae Young last year, Huerter took the second-most three-point attempts by any player on the Hawks and made the second-most per game as well. Whether it is off-the-dribble or on catch-and-shoot situations, Kevin Huerter will be asked to shoot a lot this upcoming season and will likely be like Duncan Robinson was for the Heat this past season.
Last year, Atlanta was the worst three-point shooting team in the league— shooting 33.3% from deep, but this year, they will skyrocket inside the top 10 and possibly be one of the better shooting teams in the league.
