Why the Trade Benefits the Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder is a team that could look a lot different when the 2020-21 NBA season tips off. Chris Paul has already been traded to the Phoenix Suns— bringing in Kelly Oubre Jr. and Ricky Rubio.
Additionally, Danilo Gallinari is a free agent and is unlikely to re-sign. This leaves a hole on the offensive end and Gordon Hayward could step right in. A potential trade featuring Steven Adams would only further the changes for the Thunder.
If Hayward were to opt-in for his player option, both teams would be swapping expiring contracts. Landing Hayward even on a multi-year deal would be a logical buy-low scenario for the Thunder to allow him to build his value for a future trade.
The Thunder are entering a rebuild and Adams does not fit in. He is a player on an expiring contract and will not be re-signed long-term. Trading him and getting anything back is the perfect course of action for the Thunder.
