X-Factor #2: Starting The Season Without Markkanen
Lauri Markkanen will miss the first few weeks of the season with a sprained elbow, leaving the Bulls at a disadvantage out of the gate. In a very competitive Eastern Conference where a playoff spot or two may be up for grabs, a fast start could be the difference between making the playoffs and missing out. Markkanen was the Bulls’ best player last season, and his absence will present a definite challenge to open the season. Markkanen averaged 15.2 points and 7.5 assists per game as a rookie, numbers that earned him First-Team All-Rookie honors. His ability to spread the floor often presents a tough matchup to opposing defenders, giving the Bulls a reliable threat to score from anywhere on the court.
Another rookie, Wendell Carter, will likely be asked to step up in Markkanen’s absence. Carter was one of the best players on a very good Duke team last season, often outshining fellow lottery pick Marvin Bagley. Carter is a skilled scorer and tenacious rebounder with a feel for the game well beyond his years. If he can adapt to the NBA as a rookie as well as he adapted to the college game as a freshman, the Bulls may not miss Markkanen as much as they previously thought.
When Markkanen returns, he and Carter should be a formidable young frontcourt duo in the Eastern Conference.
