Boston Celtics: 3 Goals for the Upcoming 2018-19 Season

2. Increase Their Offensive Efficiency

The Celtics were a poor offensive team last season. They ranked 18th in offensive rating (105.3), only marginally ahead of the Detroit Pistons (104.9). Their scoring per game was even worse, where they finished 20th overall with 104 points per game.

For a team so stacked with talent, it’s hard to imagine why they didn’t crack the top half of the league in offense. Injuries played a part, but even with Kyrie Irving healthy, the Celtics weren’t that great a team offensively.

In the time before Irving was shut down, Boston were slightly better on the offensive end. They ranked 16th overall and were 0.4 points better on that side of floor (105.7). While Kyrie was still fit they also experienced one of their biggest lulls offensively. Across a 13-game period in January, the Celtics were the 2nd worst team in offense across the league.

Offense is also what cost them a series win over the Cavaliers in the Conference Finals, as was put forth by their coach.

“This team was the only team that I’ve been around at this level that I thought we might shoot 36 percent and win the game. But we just had one of those nights.”

Going into 2018-19 Boston should be aiming for at least top-10 on the offensive end. Hayward gives them another dimension on both ends and should help increase their efficiency on that end. Improvements from Tatum and Brown should also lead to a jump into the upper-tier for the team.
