Reason 1. Wall Has Good Enough Teammates
John Wall is without question the star of the Washington Wizards, but the team is constructed in a way that caters to his strengths as a player. Because of this, the play of Wall’s teammates often has a direct correlation to how he is able to play. Bradley Beal is Wall’s All-Star partner in the backcourt, and he is the perfect partner for the way he plays.
Wall is a more traditional point guard who looks to create for his teammates and control the game through his passing ability. Beal is a scorer, able to get into position for catch-and-shoot opportunities and also able to finish high percentage looks in transition. In the 2016-17 season, the duo combined to average 46.2 points per game, making them one of the best duos in the NBA.
Wall also has a knockdown shooter on the wing in Otto Porter. Porter has been one of the best three-point shooters in the league over the last two seasons, meaning that he is yet another player for Wall to find for open looks.
The Wizards made a bit of a splash in the free agent market when they brought in veteran center Dwight Howard. Howard has had some locker room issues over the course of his career but remains a very talented player. He is also a player who could be beneficial for John Wall’s MVP chances. In an ideal situation, the Wizards will use Howard how the Clippers used DeAndre Jordan in the Chris Paul era.
Howard can be a rim-running center who is extremely dangerous in the pick and roll. Add the fact that Wall may be the best guard in the league when it comes to the pick and roll, and it could be a match made in heaven for the Wizards.
