3. Their Major 2019 Free Agency Aspirations
This year’s offseason petered out pretty quickly with little more than a flicker of action. The Nets were one of the few big movers and shakers. Thanks to the moves Sean Marks and the front office made they’ve put themselves in prime position to acquire some superstar talent in the future.
The story surrounding the free agency status of Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, Jimmy Butler and Kevin Durant is already a talking point and the next 10-12 months don’t show any signs of dulling the noise.
Reports surrounding Brooklyn have already begun trickling out, including from reputable sources in David Aldridge and Marc Stein. Stein stated,
“I expect Brooklyn to aim as high as possible in free agency while reserving the right to stay conservative if the Nets can’t convince top-tier free agents to take their money.”
While Aldridge chimed in himself in terms of Kawhi Leonard in one of his mailbags.
“I think Leonard will give the Nets a fair hearing next July.”
Kawhi would no doubt be a perfect fit for the Nets, especially if he can prove his health with the Toronto Raptors this upcoming season. Kevin Durant seems less likely if the Knicks rumors have any substance to them.
The Finals MVP could even stay the course and re-up with the Warriors. Conversely, Butler and Kyrie almost seem like a package deal at this point. Both player’s injury history could be a worry and it seems more likely that New York is their preferred destination.
If D’Angelo Russell somehow reaches his potential next season then acquiring Kyrie could be null and void. Speaking of Russell…
