As the Cleveland Cavaliers prepare for a pivotal NBA offseason focused on building around their star guard Donovan Mitchell, significant changes could be on the horizon. Amidst this backdrop, trade rumors have circulated about another key player, Darius Garland.

According to our own Grant Afseth, the San Antonio Spurs have signaled interest in Garland and have already done their due diligence as they explore potential trade opportunities.

The Spurs are looking for a talented playmaking guard to complement their rising star, Victor Wembanyama. Additionally, some within the organization view Garland as a preferable option over Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young.

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Darius Garland, Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs Updates

Garland had a strong season, averaging 18.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 6.5 assists while shooting 44.6% from the field, 37.1% from beyond the arc, and 83.4% from the free-throw line. Set to earn $36.7 million next season, his performance and contract make him a significant asset in trade negotiations. There is an expectation that he will seek to be traded if Donovan Mitchell signs a contract extension this summer.

Since being drafted fifth overall by Cleveland in the 2019 NBA Draft, Garland has earned an All-Star appearance but hasn’t quite reached the ceiling many anticipated. His potential departure could substantially alter the Cavaliers’ strategy, particularly as they look to maximize Mitchell’s impact.

The Spurs experimented with Jeremy Sochan playing point guard to begin the season, but that ended up not being the ideal option. Tre Jones, a stable playmaking guard, had success orchestrating the offense with Wembanyama, but a more dynamic option would help further elevate San Antonio’s attack.

The Spurs intend to be intentional about what moves they make when building around Wembanyama. They are not going to rush to trade for a point guard until they find the right option to pursue.
