The New York Knicks were eliminated from the NBA postseason after losing to the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. The focus quickly shifts to who they can add around Jalen Brunson this summer.

view this offseason as a prime opportunity to acquire a major star, according to Fred Katz from The Athletic.

“The specific star remains uncertain, even to the Knicks,” Katz noted. “However, they are banking on a consistent NBA reality: an unexpected star always becomes available.”

Katz mentioned Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves, Paul George from the Los Angeles Clippers, and Donovan Mitchell from the Cleveland Cavaliers as potential targets.

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Jalen Brunson, New York Knicks Updates

Towns has been a long-rumored target for New York, but the Timberwolves’ recent success in reaching the Western Conference Finals likely makes him unavailable.

George has a player option, which means he could either opt out and sign a new contract or negotiate a sign-and-trade deal with Los Angeles. While he clearly has personal ties to the area, it remains to be seen a new situation could entice him to leave.

Speculation about Mitchell’s future in Cleveland has persisted since his trade to the Cavaliers, mainly since he’s set to become a free agent in 2025. The Cavs might consider trading the five-time All-Star if he signals that he won’t re-sign. However, sources have repeatedly told NBA Analysis Network to expect Mitchell to remain in Cleveland with the team pivoting its roster construction efforts using the trade market.

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Jalen Brunson, New York Knicks Updates

Before the Knicks acquired Brunson, Mitchell was long thought of as being the organization’s top target. His first agent, Leon Rose, was brought in to run the front office. They hired Johnnie Bryant from the Utah Jazz to join the coaching staff, someone Mitchell is close with. However, the concern about having two small guards next to each other naturally has made this a challenging pairing to envision.

The Knicks’ prospects have improved significantly from last summer, already having core pieces like Brunson and O.G. Anunoby to serve as foundational building blocks. There are plenty of other important players in the fold already. Still, Julius Randle certainly becomes a name to watch in trade buzz, as sources have indicated to NBA Analysis Network.

Despite their progress, the Knicks still need one more dynamic talent to become genuine contenders, and they have the draft assets to facilitate a blockbuster trade. The process of achieving that is always easier said than done.
