The 2023-24 NBA regular season has not been great for the San Antonio Spurs, who are 15-56, owners of the third worst record in the league. But, this was all part of the long-term plan for San Antonio, who has a bonafide star in Victor Wembanyama to build around.

Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, has been everything the Spurs could have hoped for and more as a rookie. What he is doing on the court is histroic, as he is putting together the best rookie season ever.

There are things Wembanyama is accomplishing as a rookie that veterans with 10 years of experience aren’t doing. The most impressive part is that he is accomplishing all of this stuff on the court while being on a minutes restriction.

The Spurs have a strict plan they have followed all season, helping Wembanyama adjust to the rigors of the NBA. Despite the longer season and sometimes daunting travel, he has shown no signs of slowing down near the end of his rookie campaign.

There is certainly a lot of excitement about the direction San Antonio is heading in, as they are set up well for the future. They know the time to strike will be soon, as Grant Afseth of NBA Analysis Network has revealed that the Spurs will look to upgrades this offseason to put around Wembanyama.

“As the San Antonio Spurs continue to see historic results from Victor Wembanyama and remain excited to do so on a nightly basis as the 2023-24 season plays out, the focus will naturally shift to adding more talent around him when the offseason arrives.

Sources tell NBA Analysis Network that the Spurs have done due diligence on backcourt options as they monitor the trade market for guards to pair with Wembanyama. San Antonio’s results with Tre Jones and Wembanyama serve as significant optimism for how the team could execute after a backcourt upgrade,” wrote Afseth.

The Spurs have previously been connected to Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks, as an upgrade at point guard does make sense. Jones is a solid NBA player and has found success as a partner for Wembanyama, which gives the impression adding an All-Star at the position could create something truly magical for San Antonio.

This season, Wembanyama is averaging 20.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.3 steals and 3.4 blocks in only 29 minutes per game. His production in such a limited amount of playing time is truly incredible, as he is already one of the most dominant two-way players in the NBA at 20 years old.
