The journey for veteran point guard Isaiah Thomas back to the NBA has been a long one. He signed with the Salt Lake City Stars of the G League, biding his time for an opportunity to get back on an NBA roster.

It didn’t take long for him to get noticed. Thomas played well with the Stars, which earned him a roster spot with the Phoenix Suns. After not getting a contract for the 2022-23 season, Thomas was back in the NBA, agreeing to a 10-day contract.

And on Wednesday night, Thomas’ comeback was finally completed as he got into a game against the Philadelphia 76ers. After nearly two years of making his last appearance with the Charlotte Hornets, Thomas checked into a game.

“I want to play a few more years in the league, so hopefully this is a setup for that,” Thomas told reporters in Phoenix earlier Wednesday. “Whatever the opportunity is, I’m ready to make an impact each and every day. Whether I play or not, it’s bigger than putting the ball in the basket for me. I’m able to lead by example, lead by my experiences. Just help in any way possible.”

He played 1:48 in the 13-point victory, achieving his goal of being back in the league, something he was vocal about. He had one assist, missing his only shot attempt. Alas, that is the kind of role that he can likely expect to see moving forward as Phoenix isn’t planning major changes to their lineup.

Thomas isn’t expected to play many minutes with the Suns, barring a major change. Head coach Frank Vogel made it clear that he wasn’t going to be in their rotation, only being called upon should the need arise for an injury.

But, just getting the opportunity to be on an NBA team again is enough for Thomas. Despite not being in the rotation, there is a lot he can bring to a team given his experience and knowledge of the game. He also showed during his G League stint that he can still fill it up when need be.

It will be interesting to see how long Thomas remains with the Suns. He is only on a 10-day contract and the team could sign him to a second one. But, after that, they would need to guarantee his deal for the rest of the season.

But, at this point, that isn’t something that Thomas is worried about. He is just enjoying the ride, joyful to be back with an NBA team and willing to do whatever is asked of him.
