A shocking story has rocked the NBA this week. A former employee of the Minnesota Timberwolves is facing serious charges, according to ESPN, after stealing property from a team executive.

“A Minnesota Timberwolves employee was fired, arrested and charged with felony third-degree burglary for allegedly stealing thousands of internal files, including “strategic NBA information,” from a team executive, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday and obtained by ESPN,” wrote Baxter Holmes.

The person in the middle of this scandal is Somar Sarkar, who is 33 years old and was formerly a coaching analyst in the NBA with the Timberwolves. He is currently in custody and is set to face a court hearing on Thursday afternoon in Minnesota.

The Timberwolves have no further comments to make on the situation, other than they are aware of the allegations that have been made. According to Holmes, the team is not planning to pursue any criminal charges against Sarkar.

The incident in question occurred in early February. On February 2nd, Timberwolves executive vice president Sachin Gupta left a hard drive in connection to a laptop in his office at the team’s home arena.

There was a lot of information on the hard drive, including personal information of Gupta and private information about the team. When he arrived back in the office on February 5th, he reported the hard drive as missing.

Surveillance video showed that on February 3rd, Sarkar popped up twice. Written by Holmes at ESPN, “after looking to see if anyone could see him,” the complaint says. “He then left.”

Sarkar was immediately fired, and the hard drive was recovered. However, it was determined via forensics analysis that Sarkar had accessed more than 5,000 files and saved them to another device to which he downloaded the data.

The arrest of Sarkar occurred on Monday. When a search warrant was issued for his home, multiple hard drives were found, along with a computer and three tablets. Another warrant that was secured led to the finding of a device that contained the personal information of Gupta.
