The Indiana Pacers made a strategic move just before the trade deadline, opting to trade Buddy Hield with a forward-looking approach, considering his impending free agency and desire for a fresh start elsewhere. However, despite his bench role in his new team, Hield’s departure has notably impacted the Pacers and Tyrese Haliburton.

To help replace Hield, the Pacers acquired Doug McDermott, but his contribution has been limited due to recent injuries, reducing the team’s three-point shooting arsenal, which has struggled overall.

Retaining Hield could have bolstered the Pacers’ offense, especially with Bennedict Mathurin sidelined for the season, and alleviated some defensive pressure on Tyrese Haliburton, potentially improving his three-point shooting performance.

Haliburton himself addressed the repercussions of trading Hield, acknowledging the on-court ramifications.

“It’s been weird, it’s been weird for sure. I mean obviously I knew at one point we wouldn’t be able to play together for my whole career. But obviously with the trade and stuff, it’s been different and I think on the court is obvious, right? He’s so prominent in our offense with what we do with a lot of ghost screens and the way we move. His presence shooting on the floor, that opens up a ton for me because you [are] not going to be in as much in the gap if you’re guarding Buddy because you know how he is as a shooter. So it’s been a little different on the court, obviously. But I think off the court it’s been kinda the biggest adjustment for me. He just has always carried this energy around him and I think who he is as a person every day, not having that energy has been a little different.”

Without Hield, the Pacers have scaled back on certain offensive strategies, lacking a sharpshooter with Hield’s quick release and defensive attention-drawing capabilities.

Moreover, the absence of Buddy Hield’s positive presence in the locker room may have impacted team dynamics, possibly influencing Haliburton’s shooting slump. Hield’s infectious positivity could have potentially aided Haliburton in overcoming his struggles more swiftly.

While the trade decision cannot be reversed, the focus now shifts to Tyrese Haliburton overcoming his slump and McDermott’s return to bolster the team’s shooting capabilities in the near future.
