The Cleveland Cavaliers are having a fantastic season, and there is hope they will finally win an NBA playoff series for the first time since LeBron James‘ second departure in 2018.

They currently sit in third place in the Eastern Conference with a 41-24 record and are just half a game behind the surging Milwaukee Bucks. As was the case last season when they returned to the playoffs, the Cavs are getting the job done with a withering defense, and the fact that they’re seventh in fast-break points per game shows that they’re also playing at a faster pace and taking advantage of their youth.

Donovan Mitchell has been leading the way with his 28.0 points and 6.2 assists per game this season. While he has missed Cleveland’s last seven games, he’s expected to return to game action soon. However, the team’s fan base has been anxious that he may leave in 2025 when he can become a free agent.

However, insider Sam Amico sounds confident Mitchell will sign a max contract extension with the Cavs, and he even tweeted that the star guard is happy in Cleveland.

The speculation is that Mitchell, who has an opt-out clause in his current contract for the summer of 2025, wants to play with the New York Knicks. When the Utah Jazz made him available via trade during the 2022 offseason, most thought he was headed for the Big Apple.

Mitchell is originally from Westchester County, less than an hour from Midtown Manhattan. The bright lights and high-frequency energy of New York City and Madison Square Garden are undoubtedly alluring for many people, but especially for someone who originated in the Tri-state area.

But if he stays put in Northeast Ohio, the Cavs will continue to have a bright future and perhaps a much higher ceiling than where they stand right now.
