The main reason that many people have tuned in to watch the San Antonio Spurs during the 2023-24 NBA regular season has been Victor Wembanyama. The No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft has lived up to the massive expectations placed on his shoulders, as he is putting together one of the best seasons we have ever seen.

But, fans will have to wait a few days to see him back on the court. The Spurs announced that Wembanyama will not be taking the court on Thursday night against the Sacramento Kings. He has been ruled out with a sprained right ankle.

Playing against the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night, Wembanyama looked to have possibly rolled his ankle in the second quarter. He was subbed out shortly after that, but was able to get back on the court in the second half and barely came out again.

Given where the Spurs are in the standings, and their plan for the 2023-24 NBA season, it shouldn’t come as a major surprise that Wembanyama is being held out. There is no incentive to push him to play through any nicks and bruises as the franchise is taking a long-term approach.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Victor Wembanyama & San Antonio Spurs Updates

That is the right move, as something special is brewing in San Antonio with Wembanyama at the forefront. Despite being in his first season in the NBA and only scratching the surface of his potential, he is already a dominating force on both ends of the floor.

Averaging 20.7 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 3.4 blocks per game, Wembanyama is putting together the most impressive rookie season in NBA history. The blocks are currently leading the NBA.

If he can keep those numbers up, he will make history. The only other player to reach those numbers is Shaquille O’Neal during the 1999-2000 season when he won the MVP award.
