Never make assumptions about how the NBA will unfold. A situation may seem obvious. You may think you know what a team is going to do. In the end, you may be wrong.
Look at the Washington Wizards. Fans expected them to move Kyle Kuzma at the trade deadline. They didn’t. Do the Wizards intend on hanging onto Kuzma for long?
We’re not sure. The Wizards may see Kuzma as a foundational piece. On the other hand, they may have simply been responding to a buyer’s market. Could they send Kuzma to the Dallas Mavericks this summer?
NBA Trade Proposal
Washington Wizards Receive: G/F Tim Hardaway Jr., G/F Josh Green, G Jaden Hardy, F Olivier-Maxence Prosper, 2026 First-Round Pick (Swap – DAL)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: F Kyle Kuzma
At this year’s deadline, we had a buyer’s market. So, the Mavericks bought. They were perhaps the highest spenders at the deadline.
Dallas brought in P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford. Each of these deals was justifiable. The Mavericks have a chance to win an NBA title, so they sank assets into improving their team.

Will they regret their decision? Time will tell. The stakes are high for Dallas now. If they’re disappointing in this year’s playoffs, they could miss some of those assets. Do they even have enough for Kuzma?
Why The Washington Wizards Do The Deal
We’ll see. Let’s assume the Wizards are willing to move Kuzma this summer. They may get a better offer than this. At the same time, they may not.
After all, Kuzma is on a long-term, expensive contract. As good as he is, he’s obviously not a floor-raiser – look at where the Wizards are in the standings. This team may or may not land an unprotected first in exchange for Kuzma.

If they can’t find one, three young players and a swap ought to suffice. Hardy has star potential, and Green and Prosper are both players who could be part of Washington’s rotation for years. Should the Mavericks part with them?
Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
The Mavericks can’t worry about draft capital. It’s too late for that. If they’re forced to rebuild, that will mean that Luka Doncic issued a trade request. Dallas can restock their draft capital then.
In the meantime, they need to continue improving their roster. Kuzma would make for a solid improvement. He’d be a sensible third option behind Doncic and Kyrie Irving for this squad.

After all, Kuzma has tertiary skills in addition to his shot creation. He’s a capable defender and connective passer. He could be the Mavericks’ missing piece – assuming he’s even available.
