Bulls Offseason Trade Proposal Lands Trae Young From Hawks

The Chicago Bulls seem stuck. If any team is on the NBA’s mediocrity treadmill, this is the team. Fans expected them to make a move at this year’s deadline, but instead, the Bulls held steady.

Clearly, this front office opposes rebuilding. The Bulls want to be competitive. Whether that’s advisable or not, it seems to be the case.

It may still be true when this summer comes. In that event, the Bulls may want to make a win-now move. Who knows? Perhaps this team would be better with a star point guard. What about Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks?

Atlanta Hawks Receive: G/F Zach LaVine, 2027 First-Round Pick (CHI), 2029 First-Round Pick (CHI), 2030 First-Round Pick (Swap – CHI)

Chicago Bulls Receive: G Trae Young

With that said, the Hawks are in a similar position. Both of these teams could have been sellers at the deadline. Why did they both hold serve instead?

There are various explanations. Firstly, this was a buyer’s market. Teams were generally opposed to selling. It may be that either one of these teams is hoping that the market improves by the offseason.

On the other hand, they may just each prefer to avoid a long-term rebuilding process. Some teams would rather be mediocre than temporarily awful. Should the Hawks compromise their principles?

Why The Atlanta Hawks Do The Deal

We’re trying to find a middle ground for the Hawks here. This deal won’t necessarily force the Hawks to tank for years on end. Who knows? LaVine may be a complementary backcourt partner for Murray.

After all, he’s less ball-dominant than Young. LaVine is more of a conventional off-guard. He’ll work off the ball to get open for a jumper, and his athleticism makes him a more effective slasher.

At the same time, this may not work. In that event, the Hawks will be armed with two new unprotected firsts and a swap. If they can find more assets for Murray, the Hawks may be able to rebuild around Jalen Johnson and Okyeka Onkongwu. Should the Bulls afford them that flexibility?

Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal

This would be a bold move for the Bulls. We’re not sure if it’s the right move, either. Ideally, the Bulls would be sellers this summer. They would probably be wise to rebuild.

At the same time, LaVine allegedly has no market. If that’s true, rebuilding could be difficult for Chicago. They could justify giving up more assets in a bid to improve their place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Young could help. He’d be the best offensive player on this team. If he can develop chemistry with DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic, this could work. Alex Caruso should be the perfect backcourt partner for Young. After this deal, they may not be stuck for long.
