The Sacramento Kings have cemented their standing as perennial playoff contenders in the NBA. They picked up their 27th victory of the season on Monday night, defeating the Memphis Grizzlies 103-94.
Five different Kings players scored in double-figures, led by De’Aaron Fox with 23 points. However, Monday night’s game will be remembered by the historic performance that big man Domanta Sabonis put together.
The undermanned Grizzlies had no answers for Sabonis, who was dominant on both ends of the court. He scored 20 points on 10-of-11 shooting with 26 rebounds and five assists in 38 minutes of action. In the process, he joined Wilt Chamberlain in an exclusive group.
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Domantas Sabonis, Wilt Chamberlain, Sacramento Kings Updates
Sabonis is the first player since Chamberlain to record a line of at least 20-25-5 on 90+ percent shooting since the NBA began tracking assists during the 1956-57 season. Chamberlain accomplished that feat six times in his career and Sabonis is the first player other than him to do it.
That is a truly incredible feat for Sabonis. Any time you are mentioned in the same sentence for accomplishing something only Chamberlain has done, you are doing something right. He has had some big performances in his career, but none likely top what he accomplished on Monday night.
Sabonis pulled down over half of the Kings’ 51 rebounds in the game, taking full advantage of the Grizzlies not having their full complement of players available to play. However, Memphis did have reigning Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr. in the mix and he had no answers for Sabonis on either end of the court.
This is the fourth time this season Sabonis has recorded 20+ rebounds in a game. It is the second time in his career he reached the 25-rebound plateau, with the previous time being November 29th, 2021 against the Minnesota Timberwolves while playing for the Indiana Pacers. In that game, Sabonis recorded a triple-double.
