The NBA trade deadline will soon be here. In a matter of weeks, rumors will begin to quiet down. For the time being, they’re as loud as they’ll be at any point in the season.

It can be difficult to separate fact from fiction at this time of year. We hear that players are available, but often, it ends up being untrue. With that said, some rumors seem like they must be true.

For example, the New York Knicks seem likely to move Quentin Grimes. It’s been rumored that Grimes is unhappy in New York. His role has shrunk in 2023-24. Grimes is due for an extension this summer, and it’s unlikely that the Knicks will give it to him.

Could they send him to the Memphis Grizzlies?

New York Knicks Receive: G Derrick Rose, 2025 First-Round Pick (Lottery Protected – MEM)

Memphis Grizzlies Receive: G/F Quintin Grimes

We said the rumors would quiet down. That doesn’t mean they’ll be silenced. We’ll begin thinking about the offseason as soon as the deadline passes.

That’s the nature of the NBA’s rumor mill. It doesn’t stop churning. For example, the Cleveland Cavaliers likely won’t move Donovan Mitchell at this year’s deadline.

If you think people won’t speculate about him for the rest of the year, we have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

If the Philadelphia 76ers fall short in the playoffs, the Joel Embiid rumors will begin to resurface. We’ll start hearing names we haven’t heard before as well. Ultimately, NBA trade rumors aren’t going anywhere.

Should the Knicks put an end to some rumors by moving Grimes?

Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal

We know. This would be Rose’s third tour of duty with the Knicks. Meanwhile, his last run with the team didn’t seem to end well. Why would the Knicks want him back?

Well, circumstances have changed since Rose was last a Knick. At that time, Immanuel Quickley was blocking his path to playing time. Quickley is now a Toronto Raptor.

Meanwhile, the Knicks could use a reserve playmaker as they aim to make a deep playoff run. Rose could be that reserve playmaker. Otherwise, New York should be happy to get a lottery protected first in return for Grimes.

Should the Grizzlies give up that asset for him?

Why The Memphis Grizzlies Do The Deal

Grimes’ value is difficult to measure. He’s a young player who should be a valuable 3-and-D guard for a long time in this league. On the other hand, he’s about to get an extension, and he hasn’t flashed much in the way of star potential during his time in New York.

Realistically, he may go for a handful of second-round picks. Yet, the Grizzlies have very few second-round picks moving forward. Meanwhile, they’re rumored to be interested in Grimes.

If they want him, they’ll likely have to pair with a lottery-protected first. That could be worth the cost. Grimes’ low-usage 3-and-D skillset should help the Grizzlies when they’re healthy and looking to return to the playoffs in 2024-25. By then, the trade rumors will be in full force once again.
