The NBA’s trade season is upon us. The trade deadline is approaching. Soon, we’ll see a flurry of movement around the league.

Contenders will be trying to balance their rotation. They’ll look to plug holes in their roster. For some teams, that will mean making the types of moves we expect. With that said, other teams may subvert our expectations.

Take the Dallas Mavericks. This team could use some depth in their front-court rotation. They could use a 3-and-D wing. The Mavericks have one of the best backcourts in the NBA in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Could they acquire another guard in Malcolm Brogdon of the Portland Trail Blazers?

Portland Trail Blazers Receive: C Richaun Holmes, G/F Josh Green

Dallas Mavericks Receive: G Malcolm Brogdon, C Moses Brown

Contenders aren’t the only teams that will make significant moves. Rebuilding teams may be looking to shake things up as well. With that said, they’ll have different priorities than a contending team.

Rebuilding teams won’t look to improve their roster. If anything, they may opt to get worse. These teams are looking to get younger.

As a result, they’ll look to send their quality veterans to contenders in exchange for assets. The Blazers are one of those teams.

This group has a young core, but they have some veterans that they’d surely like to move. Contenders will be looking at Brogdon and Jerami Grant as the deadline approaches.

Should the Mavericks add another guard in Brogdon?

Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal

A complete guard rotation will feature three guards. They’ll have a starting point guard, a starting off-guard, and a sixth man. As it stands, the Mavericks are one guard short.

Unless you consider Tim Hardaway Jr. a guard, that is. He’s played the role of sixth man for Dallas this year. That’s fine, but Hardaway Jr. may serve this team better in the starting lineup. If Dallas moved him to the 3 permanently, they’d benefit from the floor spacing he provides Doncic and Irving.

They’d also have a recent Sixth Man of the Year winner piloting the second unit. The Mavericks would have as much offensive juice as anybody in the NBA following this deal.

Should the Blazers help them bolster their rotation?

Why The Portland Trail Blazers Do The Deal

The Blazers certainly ought to shop Brogdon. In all likelihood, they’ll want draft capital for him. Unfortunately, landing an unprotected first may be difficult. Brogdon is injury-prone, and he’s on a fairly substantial contract.

What about a young player instead? The Blazers could use Green. This team has a lot of young talent, but most of it is in the backcourt. Adding a young, defensive-minded wing like Green would make sense for this organization.

So does getting off of Brogdon’s contract. Meanwhile, adding Holmes’ deal to the books is inconsequential. This deal makes financial sense for the Blazers, and they should be happy to add Green as well. This is a team to watch as the NBA’s trade season gets underway.
