Some NBA players need more time than others. They have the natural talent, but they need the game to slow down. Once it does, they’re ready to make an impact in the league.

It seems like Coby White of the Chicago Bulls is one of those players. He’s been underwhelming to begin his NBA career – until this year, that is. In 2023-24, White seems to have figured it out.

Ironically, his breakout is happening as soon as the Bulls are looking likely to rebuild. The Bulls could keep him – White is still young.

On the other hand, they could look to sell high on him. Could they send him to the San Antonio Spurs?

NBA Trade Proposal: San Antonio Spurs Land Chicago Bulls’ Coby White

San Antonio Spurs Receive: G Coby White

How much time does a front office have? Sure, fans will be patient in the early stages of a rebuild. Eventually, they’ll start to stir. If a team has a losing record on an annual basis, eventually, they’ll start to hear about it.

Of course, if they’re not rebuilding, the concerns will be louder. The worst place that an NBA team can be in is one where they’ve got a veteran team – and they’re losing games anyway.

That’s been the case for the Chicago Bulls for the last couple of seasons. By contrast, Spurs fans are still feeling patient. This is the second season of their rebuild.

Still, with Victor Wembanyama on the roster, they’ll expect results in the next couple of years. Could acquiring White help them achieve those results?

Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal

The Spurs will eventually need a point guard. The Jeremy Sochan experiment feels like it’s over. Tre Jones is a backup. With that said, they don’t need to acquire that point guard now.

On the other hand, what’s stopping them? Sure, the Spurs may not want to sink assets into a star point guard. That’s not what they’re doing here. They can afford to part with one first-round pick for a player like White.

After all, he’s become a knockdown three-point shooter in 2023-24. White also offers fantastic positional size and some playmaking ability. He could be a perfect addition to this young core.

Should the Bulls part with him?

Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal

White is only 23. The Bulls don’t have to move him. Even if Chicago is open to rebuilding, they could see White as part of their core moving forward.

With that said, NBA players’ careers age in something like dog years. A 23-year-old is much different from a 19-year-old. If the Bulls are rebuilding, they should prioritize players on rookie deals.

If White keeps playing at this pace, he’ll be due for a massive extension while the Bulls are still sorting their future out. So, it would make sense to move him. In that event, this would be a fair return.

White’s market value would likely be a first-round pick. That’s a lot more than he would have got the Bulls last year – luckily, he’s starting to figure it out.
