Every team in the NBA has its history. That said, some of those histories are a little richer than others. Throughout the league’s history, a few franchises stand head and shoulders above the rest.

The San Antonio Spurs are one of those organizations. Throughout the 2000s, the Spurs were almost always in the playoff picture.

They’ve been rebuilding in recent years, but with Victor Wembanyama on the roster, they’ll be looking to rise back to the top of the league soon.

By contrast, the Golden State Warriors are the most recent team to join history’s elites. They’ve been on a dynastic run in recent years. With that said, it’s been a difficult 2023-24 season for the Warriors.

Could they acquire Keldon Johnson from the Spurs to get back on track?

San Antonio Spurs Receive: G/F Andrew Wiggins, 2026 First-Round Pick (GSW), 2028 First-Round Pick (Swap – GSW)

Golden State Warriors Receive: G/F Keldon Johnson, F Cedi Osman

With that said, time is a flat circle. The NBA’s history is ongoing. Teams that don’t have the same storied history as the Spurs or the Warriors can still put their mark on the league.

After all, the Warriors weren’t always a powerhouse. In the early 90s, they put together some fun, offensive-minded teams with no real title odds.

Later on, the Warriors would become perennial basement dwellers. What happened? The Warriors hit on some draft picks. It was a combination of good scouting and good luck. Ever since, they’ve been dominating the NBA.

Could acquiring Johnson help them continue that dominance?

The Warriors don’t simply do this deal for Johnson. They should be interested in Osman as well. He can replicate some of Wiggins’ skillset as a low-usage, 3-and-D wing.

Still, it’s about Johnson more than anything else. The Warriors could use an injection of shot creation. Their offense has looked stagnant in 2023-24. Johnson can get offense from scratch.

Acquiring him should make the Warriors a much more dangerous squad. He doesn’t force them to sacrifice their defensive principles, either. Johnson is solid on that end of the floor.

Should the Spurs part with such a useful player?

The Spurs already have a similarly useful player. Johnson and Devin Vassell are remarkably similar players. They have complementary skillsets, but still, the Spurs may feel like they’d do better to acquire assets for one.

Perhaps that’s why Johnson is in trade rumors. This is the type of return that San Antonio should expect for him. Johnson has flashed some star potential, but not enough to warrant a package including multiple firsts.

Meanwhile, the Spurs can use Wiggins. He’s a similar, albeit worse player to Johnson. Still, his championship experience should be valuable to this young core. In time, Wiggins could help the Spurs return to glory.
