Perhaps we should be more patient with the Pistons. Every rebuild operates on its timeline. Realistically, a rebuild typically doesn’t end until a team drafts a player with true franchise player potential.
In other words, there’s some luck involved. Look at the Mavericks. Luka Doncic was ready to carry a playoff team by his sophomore season. That’s irregular. More often, it takes players longer to develop into that type of star.

Will Cade Cunningham ever get there? It’s hard to say. Cunningham’s 2023-24 season has been a mixed bag – he’s had some high highs and some low lows.

Sure. If the Pistons are concerned with improving Cunningham’s assist-to-turnover ratio, they won’t make this deal. Bogdanovic’s floor spacing is his only saving grace. Yet, that shouldn’t be their concern, should it?
The Pistons need to concern themselves with the future – after all, the present is bleak. As the worst team in the league, there’s no reason for Detroit to hang onto an aging player like Bogdanovic. They might as well get some value in return for him.

Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
We’ll correct ourselves. Dallas may have a couple of needs. This team could use a defensive wing. They could also use a third option after Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Unfortunately, they may only have the assets to land one or the other.
A third option feels like a higher priority. This team’s offensive pecking order is shallow. Often, that’s a recipe for falling apart in the playoffs. Dallas needs to add a new wrinkle to their attack if they want to make a deep run.
