Some NBA teams don’t have a prominent best player in their history. Who is the best Charlotte Hornet in their franchise history? You don’t know. There is not a clear answer.

Stephen Curry is the best player in the history of the Golden State Warriors. We can say that definitively. Wilt Chamberlain didn’t spend his best years in Golden State. Otherwise, no player in the team’s history compares to Curry.

Will Curry spend the rest of his career in Golden State? Until recently, that felt like a foregone conclusion. With that said, the Warriors are rapidly falling apart.

Could they send Curry to the Brooklyn Nets?

Golden State Warriors Receive: F/C Ben Simmons, F Cameron Johnson, G/F Cam Thomas, 2025 First-Round Pick (PHX via BKN), 2027 First-Round Pick (Top 8 Protected – PHI via BKN), 2029 First-Round Pick (DAL via BKN)

Brooklyn Nets Receive: G Stephen Curry

Who’s the best player in Nets history? That depends on how you’re measuring their history. This franchise has moved from New Jersey to New York, back to New Jersey, and finally, back to New York. Which players are we including?

If we count the New York Nets years, the answer is probably Julius Erving. The man known as Dr. J was one of the most prominent stars in basketball throughout the 1970s. He wasn’t even playing in the NBA – Erving starred with the Nets in the now-defunct ABA.

If we’re strictly talking about NBA history, the answer might be Jason Kidd. It could have been Kevin Durant, but his time with the team was too brief.

Could the answer someday be Stephen Curry?

We know. This feels unthinkable. In all likelihood, Golden State won’t trade Curry. Let’s indulge in some thought experiments and assume that they could. Should the Nets be interested?

Absolutely. The Nets owe their first-round picks, whether outright or via swap, through to 2027. They have no incentive to tank. Meanwhile, there’s no question that this deal would make them a better team. Curry remains one of the best players in the NBA.

What else can we say? The Nets would become title contenders if they acquired Curry. That fact justifies this deal on its own.

Should the Warriors part with the best player in their franchise history?

In all likelihood, the Warriors won’t trade Curry. There’s too much emotion involved. For the time being, let’s remove feelings from the equation. Can the Warriors justify this deal?

Honestly, we think so. The Warriors are far removed from title contention. Realistically, they could miss the playoffs this season. It feels like their dynasty is concluding. Typically, when a team rebuilds, they trade their best player. That’s what the Warriors are doing here.

They’re getting a haul in return. Thomas has taken a star turn this year. Johnson is one of the best shooters in the league. Throw in three first-round picks, and who knows? The Warriors could trade the best player in the history of their franchise.
