One of the most popular debates in basketball circles is ranking NBA players. There is no consensus list and everyone seems to have an opinion that they feel strongly about. It isn’t something that only fans do, as even the players will get involved in the debates from time to time.

Recently, one of the players to share their opinion on the GOAT debate was seasoned veteran, Trevor Ariza. Ariza, who last played in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2021-22 season offered up his thoughts on who the best player is.

In his opinion, it is Kobe Bryant as 1A, with LeBron James as 1B. He believes that Bryant is the best player to ever step on the court, an opinion that will certainly draw some heated responses. Not having Michael Jordan as one of your top two is one that will always lead to emotions rising as many people believe him to be first or second.

Ariza did spend a little time as a teammate with Bryant earlier in his career as well. His first stint with the Lakers was from 2007-2009 when Bryant was at the peak of his powers. The two were teammates for the NBA Championship in 2009 over the Orlando Magic.

Having a chance to play alongside of both legends, Ariza’s opinion does hold some weight. Despite his experience with James being at the tail end of his career, not in the middle of his prime as it was with Bryant, he spent plenty of time going up against the superstars in his career as well.

After winning a championship in 2009 with Bryant on the Lakers, Ariza joined the Houston Rockets, attempting to dethrone the purple and gold from their championship standing. A little later in his career, he spent time with the Washington Wizards, witnessing the greatness of James firsthand as he led the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers to eight straight NBA Finals appearances.

His opinion is one that some people will agree with and just as many, if not more, will disagree with. But, he knows just how great Bryant and James are given the time he spent with them as teammates and opponents.
