One NBA writer is proposing that the Dallas Mavericks trade for Houston Rockets forward Jae’Sean Tate.

Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report proposed the following trade idea between the Mavericks and Rockets:

The Dallas Mavericks receive Jae’Sean Tate from the Houston Rockets for Dwight Powell, a 2025 second-round pick (via TOR) and a 2028 second-round pick (via MIA)

Hughes thinks the Mavericks need to improve their defense to become legitimate title contenders, which is why he has urged Dallas to acquire Tate from Houston.

“The Mavs are off to a 6-1 start driven by the league’s second-best offense. Questions about their quality on the other end, where they rank 18th and lack anyone with Tate’s size/skill combo, are the reason they rate as pretenders,” Hughes wrote in his NBA trade column. “Though far from a blockbuster acquisition, Tate fits into a niche that Grant Williams and Maxi Kleber can’t quite occupy.”

Tate is averaging 6.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.5 blocks for the Rockets this season while shooting 50.0% from the field, 53.8% from beyond the arc and 80.0% from the free-throw line.

The 28-year-old Tate has career NBA averages of 11.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.5 blocks. He signed a three-year, $22.1 million contract with the Rockets in July 2022. Tate is making $6.5 million this season.

The Mavericks made a blockbuster trade last season for Kyrie Irving. It will be interesting to see if they make another deal this season.
