Four-time All-Star Donovan Mitchell recruited Max Strus to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the offseason. Mitchell called Strus and explained why the Cavaliers would be a perfect fit for him, according to NBA writer Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.

Strus signed a four-year, $62 million contract with the Cavaliers as part of a sign-and-trade deal with the Miami Heat. The sharpshooter put up 27 points in his Cleveland debut against the Brooklyn Nets while shooting 9-of-17 from the field and 7-of-13 from beyond the arc.

“There’s a lot to his game that I didn’t know,” Mitchell said about Strus. “I’ve had to guard him. I’ve had to chase him. The shooting is the obvious one. But I think you look at his knowledge, what he sees, the anticipation he plays with, being in the right spots, switching, guarding his man, sprinting out in transition, making the right play, there are so many things he does, the intangibles he has, that go outside of his shooting. That’s something that really stood out to me tonight and has stood out to me all camp. We’re still trying to figure each other out. This is not a bad way to start. When you add a guy like Max Strus to what we already have, it’s special.”

The Cavaliers beat the Nets by one point. Mitchell hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 12.0 seconds left in regulation to finish with 27 points, five rebounds and six assists in 35 minutes.

Mitchell said Strus’ off-ball movement reminds him of Kyle Korver.

“His movement is kind of Kyle Korver-esque,” Mitchell said. “He doesn’t stop moving and Kyle was the same way. He draws so much attention.”
