The Minnesota Timberwolves have an exciting future ahead of them with Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns leading the charge. Minnesota legend Kevin Garnett recently discussed the future of his former team on his podcast, KG Certified.

“I loved what I saw out of Anthony Edwards,” Garnett said. “He on his way. He playing with that different energy, too. When we get into the season this year, I’m looking for him to have a big year. Just off how he looked this summer. He has too big of a personality to be Robin.”

Edwards turned heads with his dominant play at the FIBA World Cup this summer. Through eight games, he led Team USA in scoring with 18.9 points per contest. He also shot 47.5% from the field and 31.1% from three. Ant-Man did all of this while playing just 26 minutes per game.

In last year’s first-round series against the eventual champions, Edwards was a one-man wrecking crew. Despite the 4-1 defeat, the former Georgia Bulldog torched Denver for 31.6 points per game on 48.2% shooting.

As Ant-Man continues to establish himself as a bonafide game-changer, many fans believe Karl-Anthony Towns should take a step back to accommodate the growing stardom of Edwards. In the playoffs, Towns took almost nine fewer shot attempts per game than Edwards. The big man averaged a modest 18.2 points and 10.2 rebounds.

Garnett, however, does not view the Towns-Edwards duo in that light. He simply believes the two of them should learn to coexist and grow together in order for the Wolves to achieve their goals.

“It ain’t about stepping back, it’s about them just going forward together,” Garnett said. “They both are the faces of the franchise.”

As Garnett and Paul Pierce did in 2008, Edwards and Towns must learn to channel their strengths and combine them in the most successful fashion possible. While players like Rudy Gobert and Mike Conley bring vital skills to the table, the Timberwolves will only go as far as Edwards and Towns can take them.

Whether it be a higher volume of two-man sets between Edwards and Towns or a shift in usage rate for either of the two, something has to change for a team that has failed to win a playoff series since 2004.
