The Boston Celtics have fallen short of winning a championship the past two NBA seasons. They have gotten to the Eastern Conference Finals last year, and the Finals the year before that.

What they need to get over the hump is a really good player or perhaps a superstar. Here are three intriguing trade targets to monitor for the Boston Celtics.

Bojan Bogdanovic

Bojan Bogdanovic has been a solid player for most of his career and is currently on a Pistons team not going anywhere, anytime soon. So, it would be an ideal prospect that could help solidify a backup for Jayson Tatum when he sits out.

Bogdanovic last season averaged 21.6 points on 48% field goal shooting. More impressively he shot the three ball at 41%. That is the reason why he is an intriguing trade target for the Celtics. They get someone who can score the ball and be a solid backup.

The only issue might be that he will have to accept the role he is given. That won’t be hard to convince him of, because he would be on a contending team trying to win a championship. Also, he is owed $20 million for the upcoming season and $19 million for the following year. As someone coming off the bench, he will be an expensive option. However, it might be worth it considering the contribution.

Although he is 34 years old, there is no denying the skill set and ability to put the ball in the basket still exists. He can also play significant minutes if coach Mazzulla decides to play big and move Tatum and Jaylen Brown to the guard positions.

What they have to give up is their over saturated guard players. In fact, Malcolm Brogdon is reportedly upset with the Celtics. That stems from being considered a trade target and that he will come off the bench despite the team having moved on from Marcus Smart.

Damian Lillard

Damian Lillard could be a really good trade target for the Celtics. Even though he would like to go to the Heat, that is still not a guarantee and could be months away. That is why if Boston gets a head start in the recruiting process they can come away with a steal.

Lillard has already expressed the fact he wants to play for a contending team. For years he has been putting up superstar numbers for the Blazers organization and now is the time to capitalize for Boston. They get to pair up their young stars in Brown and Tatum with a true scoring guard who can also distribute the ball.

Lillard has averaged nearly seven assists for his career while having the scoring load placed on his shoulders. With Boston, he can continue to put up numbers while having legitimate players on his squad that can help out. He could focus more on setting up his teammates, and in return can play off the ball at times and score from deep when needed.

As mentioned earlier, Brogdon seems to be frustrated and could look to leave. That being said, the Celtics will most likely have to give up Derrick White as well along with a player like Sam Hauser. Regardless, that remains a steal for Boston and makes them immediate contenders without question.

Joel Embiid

Joel Embiid would be a player to monitor for the Celtics. Understandably for fans, he might be a hated rival. Nonetheless, he is a great player and someone you want on your team and hate playing against. Boston is missing a serious interior player and although they picked up Kristaps Porzingis, he might not get them the championship they’re looking for.

Trusting the process has been the moniker for Embiid since he’s entered the league. Unfortunately the process has continuously failed him and the 76ers have failed to surround him with reliable players. He recently hinted that he’s ready to leave Philadelphia to win.

Boston could make some serious headlines by considering Embiid as a trade target. They will have one of the most skilled big men in the league while still being able to retain Tatum and Brown. They would have to give up fan favorite Al Horford and also Porzingis for this to work. However, that might be a small sacrifice to make to get Boston another championship banner.

The Celtics have a great opportunity to consider the three trade targets mentioned above. Bogdanovic would be the more realistic trade target. Lillard and Embiid might be the dream for fans, but it won’t be impossible given their assumed availability.
