One NBA writer is proposing that the Brooklyn Nets acquire Malcolm Brogdon from the Boston Celtics in a bold trade. Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report proposed the following trade idea between the Celtics and Nets:

Trade idea: Boston Celtics trade Malcolm Brogdon and 2024 first-round pick (top-four protected, via GSW) to Brooklyn Nets for Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O’Neale

“Since the Celtics shipped out Marcus Smart this summer and never replaced him, one might assume they don’t have the backcourt depth to entertain a Brogdon deal,” Buckley wrote in his latest NBA trade column. “But if Derrick White has a leap in him and Payton Pritchard is ready to fill a regular rotation role, then the Celtics could withstand another backcourt subtraction.”

Brogdon’s relationship with the Celtics is reportedly in “peril,” according to NBA insider Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe. The Celtics traded Brogdon to the Los Angeles Clippers before his medical evaluation caused the Clippers to back out of the trade. Brogdon is angry at the Celtics for trying to trade him.

Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla said there was a “healing process” going on with Brogdon back in July. It appears the healing process isn’t going well.

“There is a healing process, there is a listening process and to see where we are at and where we have to get to,” Mazzulla said, via NBA reporter Jared Weiss of The Athletic. “We’ve had some conversations as an organization but at the same time, we understand that’s the situation that it was and as the healing process goes on, we will move forward as well as you can.”

Brogdon won the Sixth Man of the Year Award last season. He averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 67 games for the Celtics while shooting 48.4% from the field, 44.4% from beyond the arc and 87.0% from the free-throw line.

The 2016-17 Rookie of the Year with the Milwaukee Bucks, Brogdon signed a two-year, $85 million contract extension with the Indiana Pacers in October 2021. He’ll make $22.5 million next season.

Brogdon has career NBA averages of 15.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists with the Bucks, Pacers and Celtics. The Nets could start Brogdon, Spencer Dinwiddie, Cameron Johnson, Mikal Bridges and Nic Claxton if Brooklyn’s front office figured out a way to acquire Brogdon from Boston.
