The Golden State Warriors are looking to re-sign another key part of their current dynasty. Klay Thompson and the Warriors have opened contract talks in the hopes they agree on an extension.

Ramona Shelburne of ESPN mentioned on the Lowe podcast that the franchise and Thompson have “exchanged proposals.” Despite that, it remains a “slow process” and that the 33 year-old needs to have a “great year this year and he’s becomes more valuable if he does.”

Thompson is entering his final year of a 5-year contract worth $189 million signed in 2019. He is set to earn $43 million this upcoming season.

The contract extension could be similar to what “Draymond Green signed, which was a four-year deal,” according to Shelburne. Green signed a four year $100 million contract as a free agent this past off-season. The idea becomes that the Warriors might wait until the end of the season before they make a decision. That can also include a “team option” or “player option.”

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Klay Thompson & Golden State Warriors Updates

Thompson tore his ACL in his left knee in the 2019 Finals against the eventual champions, the Toronto Raptors. He was subsequently out for the entire 2019-2020 season. In his road to recovery he suffered another major injury, tearing his Achilles tendon in his right foot. That led to another lost season. He made his return in January of the 2021-2022 season, playing in just 32 games.

In his first full-year back with the Warriors this past year, he averaged 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. He still remains a key part of the franchise and is someone they hope to keep together with Green and Stephen Curry.

The 5-time All-Star was recently in the JLaw runs with trainer Jordan Lawley. He is hoping to earn the extension with the franchise he’s helped get four championships since 2015 and have a better upcoming season.
