An anonymous member of the Golden State Warriors told NBA writer Keith Smith of Spotrac that the Golden State Warriors never considered parting ways with Draymond Green, who re-signed with the Dubs on a four-year, $100 million contract on the first day of free agency.
“It was the only decision to re-sign Draymond,” the anonymous member of the Warriors said. “We were never going to break up the core. They’ve had too much success and we won the title two seasons ago. Why would we move off that group now?”
Warriors owner Joe Lacob wants Green, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson to retire with the franchise. The Dubs have won four NBA championships and played in six Finals in the Curry-Green-Thompson era.
“Certainly, we’d like Steph, Draymond and Klay to retire as Warriors,” Lacob told Madeline Kenney of the Mercury News. “That is my goal, our goal, and I think it’s a good likelihood that’ll happen.”
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Draymond Green & Golden State Warriors Updates
Curry signed a four-year, $215.4 million extension with the Warriors in August 2021. He can’t become an unrestricted free agent until the summer of 2026. Curry has won two regular-season MVPs and one Finals MVP with the Warriors.
Thompson is eligible to sign a contract extension this summer since he’s in the final year of his deal. The All-Star shooting guard signed a five-year, $189.9 million deal with Golden State in July 2019. Thompson missed two seasons in a row due to an ACL and Achilles injury.
Green could have left the Warriors this summer since he was an unrestricted free agent. He was heavily linked to the Los Angeles Lakers since he has a close relationship with LeBron James, but the Michigan State product was never going to leave Curry and Thompson.
