It’s ironic. One might expect that landing on a contender would be a blessing for a young NBA player. In a sense, it could be. They’ll pick up invaluable experience.

On the other hand, they’ll miss out on playing time. That can impact development, and also league-wide perception of a player. Could the Spurs save Kuminga’s career?
Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal
Well, the Spurs should have some reps for Kuminga. Is this team trying to make strides next season? Perhaps. The Spurs could try to play their rebuild slow. Alternatively, they could try to take a leap after drafting Victor Wembanyama.
Either way, this is not the Warriors. The Spurs will not be title hopefuls next season. They’ll have room for Kuminga.

If he breaks out, they could have one of the best young cores in the NBA. Kuminga has enough upside to easily be worth parting with this unprotected first-round pick. Is that enough for the Warriors?
Why The Golden State Warriors Do The Deal
In all likelihood, this isn’t what the Warriors pictured when they drafted Kuminga. Things don’t always go according to plan. The Warriors have been trying to work with two timelines at once. As a result, they’ve struggled to nurture the young players on their roster.
By contrast, a veteran like McDermott should fit right in. He’s one of the best movement shooters in the NBA. McDermott will complement this Warriors roster.

Meanwhile, adding a first-rounder is always good. The Warriors could use it in a trade down the line. Alternatively, by 2025, they might be ready to draft a young player. Having just made it that far is impressive enough for whoever they select.
