One writer has proposed that the Charlotte Hornets acquire Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report is proposing that the Hornets trade Terry Rozier, P.J. Washington, a 2026 first-round pick and a 2028 first-round pick to the Timberwolves for Towns, who would play with LaMelo Ball.
“Charlotte needs a shake-up in the worst kind of way,” Buckley wrote. “Buying (relatively) low on Towns would be a fascinating way to make it happen. He’d immediately plug the Hornets’ glaring void at center and team with Ball in what should be one of the NBA’s best pick-and-choose tandems.”
Without having to give up a premier talent in the trade, the Hornets would be able to thrive with Towns as a centerpiece around other talents like Miles Bridges, Brandon Miller and Nick Smith Jr. beyond just Ball.
“The Towns-Ball twosome would help establish the Hornets’ identity as an uptempo, offense-leaning outfit that should prop up role players with the incredible spacing this tandem would provide. Miles Bridges, Brandon Miller and Nick Smith Jr. could all thrive in the attack lanes Towns and Ball would open up.”
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Karl-Anthony Towns, Minnesota Timberwolves & Charlotte Hornets Updates
Tim MacMahon, Jamal Collier and Marc J. Spears of ESPN think Towns is a player who has flown under the radar in free agency but could be a big storyline at the 2024 February trade deadline. Towns signed a four-year, $224.2 million designated veteran player extension with the Timberwolves in July 2022. Minnesota hasn’t gotten past the first round of the playoffs in the KAT era, which began in 2015-16.
The 27-year-old Towns averaged 20.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists last season while shooting 49.5% from the field, 36.6% from beyond the arc and 87.4% from the free-throw line. The three-time All-Star only played in 29 games due to a serious calf injury.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Karl-Anthony Towns, Minnesota Timberwolves & Charlotte Hornets Updates
Minnesota lost to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2023 playoffs in five games and Towns and Rudy Gobert weren’t a good fit together in the frontcourt. It’s going to be interesting to track Towns’ future with the Timberwolves moving forward, especially since it appears Anthony Edwards is the new franchise player.
