The Los Angeles Lakers want to re-sign veteran point guard Dennis Schroder this summer. However, they also have other point guards on their radar, including Jevon Carter, Shake Milton and Cory Joseph, according to NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Schroder, Carter, Milton and Joseph become unrestricted free agents on June 30. Carter played for the Milwaukee Bucks this past season, Milton was with the Philadelphia 76ers and Joseph suited up for the Detroit Pistons.
Schroder averaged 12.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists for the Lakers in 2022-23. He shot 41.5% from the field, 32.9% from beyond the arc and 85.7% from the free-throw line. The 29-year-old has a very close relationship with Lakers head coach Darvin Ham.
Carter put up 8.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game for the Bucks, Milton averaged 8.4 points, 2.5 boards and 3.2 assists for the Sixers and Joseph finished the 2022-23 season with averages of 6.9 points, 1.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists with the Pistons.
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Dennis Schroder & Los Angeles Lakers Updates
Schroder, Carter, Milton and Joseph are backup point guards. D’Angelo Russell was the Lakers’ starting point guard this past season after the 2023 trade deadline. The Ohio State product becomes an unrestricted free agent on June 30, and even though he struggled in the 2023 Western Conference Finals versus the Nuggets, the Lakers are expected to re-sign D’Lo.
Los Angeles could re-sign Russell to a front-loaded two-year deal.
The Lakers are planning to re-sign combo guard Austin Reaves, small forward Rui Hachimura and Russell this summer, according to Jovan Buha of The Athletic. Reaves and Hachimura are restricted free agents. For the first time in the LeBron James-Anthony Davis era, the Lakers are expected to prioritize continuity and chemistry over chasing flashier upgrades this offseason.
