NBA champion Harrison Barnes has agreed to a three-year, $54 million extension with the Sacramento Kings, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Barnes would have become an unrestricted free agent on June 30 had he and the Kings not agreed to an extension.

Barnes averaged 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists this past season for the Kings while shooting 47.3% from the field, 37.4% from beyond the arc and 84.7% from the free-throw line. The Kings won 48 games under first-year head coach Mike Brown — who won the Coach of the Year Award — and made the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

Even though Sacramento lost to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 2023 postseason in seven games, the franchise has a bright future with Domantas Sabonis, De’Aaron Fox, Keegan Murray, Malik Monk and Kevin Huerter leading the way and now Barnes is back in the mix.

Barnes had been linked to the Indiana Pacers, who are coached by Rick Carlisle. Barnes was coached by Carlisle in Dallas and the veteran forward played with Pacers All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton and shooting guard Buddy Hield in Sacramento.

The Kings did a good job of not overpaying for Barnes, which was critical since they may sign Sabonis to a massive extension this summer. Sabonis and the Kings could agree to a four-year, $120 million renegotiate-and-extend deal, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. Sabonis is entering the final year of a four-year, $74.9 million contract that is set to pay him $19.4 million in 2023-24.
