Size will always be an asset in the NBA. Sure, small ball exists. It can be a viable strategy. Still, being large will always matter in basketball. It will always pose advantages.
The San Antonio Spurs are going to have some size next season. This team just selected Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick. He’s 7’3, and he’s expected to play the 4 for them.
That makes sense. Wembanyama is nobody’s idea of “small”, but he is thin. The Spurs may not want him wrestling with the league’s giants in the first year of his NBA career. One option appears to have emerged: Jonas Valanciunas of the New Orleans Pelicans
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the New Orleans Pelicans have made center Jonas Valanciunas available in trade talks. The Spurs are among the teams interested in a deal, especially after missing out on Naz Reid.
NBA TRADES, NEWS & RUMORS: Jonas Valanciunas, San Antonio Spurs & New Orleans Pelicans Updates
Valanciunas averaged 14.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 79 games this season. He’s not a versatile defender and is practically limited to just being a drop coverage defender, but regardless, he would fit the traditional center mold the Spurs seek next to Wembanyama.
Would Valanciunas be up to the task?
