Why The Golden State Warriors Do The Deal
Well, it’s worth noting that this would be a sign and trade. In theory, the Sacramento Kings don’t have to send the Golden State Warriors anything. They could let Draymond Green hit the open market and outright sign him.
This way, the Warriors create a trade exception. That’s most of the appeal here. The Warriors increase their flexibility dramatically by getting off of Green’s contract.
At the same time, don’t rule Dozier out as a potential contributor. He lost his 2022-23 season to injuries. Prior to that, Dozier was developing into a solid 3-and-D wing. Finally, a few second-round picks don’t hurt either.
We saw teams broker significant deals with them at this year’s deadline. With a restrictive CBA that is set to take hold in 2023-24, those assets will only continue to be valuable.
All told, the Warriors are gaining some assets for a player they could otherwise lose for nothing here. The focus would quickly need to shift to how the team plans to navigate a post-Draymond roster. Likely, this would immediately open a larger role for Jonathan Kuminga.
