The Detroit Pistons needed a wing. Now, they’ve got one. After all, this team selected Ausar Thompson with the sixth overall pick in the NBA draft.
Thompson is one of the most well-rounded prospects in his class. Pistons fans have to be excited about their future now. With that said, you can never have too many wings in this league. Moreover, Thompson may need more time to develop. Don’t be surprised if the Pistons target another wing this summer.
Still, it should be a wing who’s young enough to grow with this young core. The Pistons won’t be contenders next season – they’d like to take a step forward, but they shouldn’t shortchange their future.
The Pistons did evaluate some different options. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the Hawks talked to Detroit about a trade for Hunter.
“In addition to previously reported dialogue between the Hawks and Pacers about trading forward De’Andre Hunter to Indiana, there were also significant talks between Atlanta and Detroit about moving Hunter to the Pistons, league sources told Yahoo Sports,” Fischer wrote.

The Pistons ultimately decided not to take on Hunter’s contract, but there are potentially intriguing trade frameworks that don’t require such a disadvantaged return.
