After the first trade fell apart because of Malcolm Brogdon’s health status, the Boston Celtics worked out a new trade to land Kristaps Porzingis before the 2023 NBA Draft. However, it meant parting ways with a key piece of the roster.
Late Wednesday night, a new three-team trade was worked out to send the former All-Star big man to Boston. This time around, the Memphis Grizzlies were the third team with the Celtics and Washington Wizards. They gave up two first-round picks and guard Tyus Jones to add former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart.
Since being drafted in 2014, Smart has been seen as the heart and soul of the Celtics’ locker room. Now, he will be bringing that energy to a young Memphis team looking to take the next step.
In the short term, the Grizzlies likely see Smart as an answer to dealing with Ja Morant’s suspension. In the long term, Memphis will have to work on finding time for all three of their guards.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Marcus Smart, Boston Celtics & Memphis Grizzlies Updates
Some might feel that the Grizzlies gave up too much in the deal, but it was a move that needed to be done. This season, it became clear that they needed an adult in that locker room. Smart is someone who is going to come in on day one and set the tone on and off the court. Also, he has an abundance of playoff and finals experience.
This is also a good move for Memphis from a financial standpoint. Smart is under contract for the next three seasons, and his salary never goes over $22 million. In 61 games for Boston this season, he averaged 11.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 6.3 assists.

It might not seem it right now, but bringing in Smart has the potential to create a massive culture shift in Memphis. His attitude toward the game should help the younger guys mature some as they look to be near the top of the Western Conference again in 2024.
