NBA fans may get attached to the players on their teams. General managers can’t afford to do the same.
On a rebuilding team, that holds especially true. Typically, we’re talking about teams that are accumulating as much talent as possible. In time, they won’t be able to afford to keep it all.
For example, look at the Houston Rockets. This team has brought in a remarkable number of young players over recent years.
In time, they’ll need to cull. The Rockets will have to identify their core pieces and move some of their other guys.
Is KJ Martin a core piece? We’re not sure. The Rockets will need to decide soon. Martin will be eligible for a contract extension next summer. If Houston isn’t keeping him, they need to trade him.
